Refrigerated Trucks

What are Refrigerated Trucks? Its Pros & Cons!!

Transportation of materials is being carried out from the start of civilization. We always needed to transport a variety of stuff from one place to another. In starting, the transportation was done between villages or inside a village. With the expansion of the world, transportation of products also increased. Today, we transport stuff across the world. Transportation techniques are advancing as the advancement in technology comes. There was a time when transporting dairy products from one place to another was not possible but now it can be done easily with the help of refrigerated trucks. Today, we are going to discuss everything about these trucks and will understand how they have changed the method of transporting stuff from one place to another. Let’s get started with the article.

Refrigerated Trucks

Now, the first question is, what are these refrigerator trucks? The answer is simple and is clear through its name itself. These are specially designed trucks that have an in-built refrigeration machine to keep the contents kept inside at a desirable temperature. A refrigerator truck is not a very complex vehicle and is quite useful while transporting several items such as fruits, vegetables, frozen food, dairy products, medicines, vaccines, etc. All these items will not survive the journey if transported in a normal vehicle, but thanks to a refrigerated truck, they can easily be transported from one place to another.

The walls of the container on the truck are completely insulated to increase the working efficiency of these trucks. The working of a refrigerator truck is quite similar to any other refrigeration system like a cold room or a freezer. The only difference is that all other refrigeration systems are stationary meaning they are installed in a specific area while these reefer trucks keep moving at all times.

Working of Refrigerated Trucks

If we are to transport a temperature-sensitive item from one place to another, we’ll be needing a refrigerated truck to accomplish the task without any difficulties. It is no doubt that these trucks are very useful but the question is, how do they do the work while constantly moving?

These refrigerator trucks work continuously with the help of various parts. The details and working of these parts and the truck as a whole are given below:

1.      Compressor: The compressor is the most important part of the whole cooling process. It is powered by the reefer van’s belt system while the truck is moving. It compresses the gaseous refrigerant coming from inside the truck through a piping system.

2.      Condenser: The condenser is placed on the refrigeration container. It liquefies the compressed refrigerant coming from the compressor and reduces its temperature so that the coolant can be used again by the refrigerator truck.

3.      Evaporator: An evaporator is located inside the refrigeration trailer. The refrigerant cooled down by the condenser comes to the evaporator. The evaporator takes in the hot air from inside the trailer and cools it down using the coolant which converts the coolant again into the evaporated form. The cool air generated is sent into the reefer truck to keep the temperature in control.

4.      Insulation: The cooling performed by all the refrigeration parts will not matter if your freezer truck is not insulated properly. Usually, every truck carrying temperature-sensitive materials is uniformly layered with polyurethane foam which is an excellent insulation material.

Types of Refrigerated Trucks

Now, after getting to know about these refrigerator trucks and their working, let’s discuss the various types of trucks available in the market for different applications and uses. There are mainly three types of refrigerated trucks:

1.      Normal Refrigerated Trailers: These are normal trucks with a basic refrigeration system that can maintain temperatures in the range of 20°C to -30°C easily. These are generally used to transport items like fruits, vegetables, and dairy products.

2.      Cryogenic Freezer Trucks: These are highly priced and are not commonly seen on the streets. These freezer trucks are used to transport fragile and important items like medicines and vaccines. These trucks can keep the temperature in the range of 0°C to -140°C.

3.      Heated Trucks: These trucks work oppositely and generate heat instead of reducing the temperature. These are ideal if you want to transport items that require high temperatures to be stored at.

Pros and Cons of Refrigerated Trucks

Now we know almost everything about a refrigerated truck. It is important to know the benefits and disadvantages of every product you want to use. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of a refrigerator truck.

Pros

There are many advantages of a refrigerated truck and the most common benefits are mentioned below:

·         Freezer trucks are always in high demand as people always need to transport stuff like milk, fruits, and vegetables. This creates a big opportunity for people to make a living using these trucks.

·         As refrigerated trucks used various equipment and cost more to operate, the transportation charges are also huge. You can get from 1.5 to 2 times the fare when compared to normal trucks.

·         These trucks can be used for both normal cargo and temperature-sensitive cargo. So if you are unable to find any cargo for refrigerated trucks, take a normal cargo by turning off the refrigeration system.

Cons

·         It is understandable that the price of a refrigerated truck is more than a normal truck but it also has more maintenance costs. All the parts working to keep the temperature low must be serviced from time to time.

·         Transporting temperature-sensitive cargo is not easy. You need to pre-cool your freezer truck before loading the cargo. If not pre-cooled, it can waste a lot of precious time.

·         Also, to cover accidents and other mishaps, you’ll be paying extra money. Since refrigerator trucks cost more, their insurance cost is also more.

Conclusion

We can conclude the article by agreeing that a refrigerated truck is one of the most useful inventions of science and technology. These trucks have made transporting temperature-sensitive items easy. As we’ve discussed that there are certain things you should consider while purchasing a refrigerator truck and choose the best type of truck that fulfils your requirements.
